Caring for Caregivers: AgeWell Announces New “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” Series

AgeWell Atlanta is proud to announce a brand new in-person series starting in the new year! The classes, called “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” are dedicated to supporting and empowering caregivers.

We’ve partnered with Cobb County Senior Services and Temple Kol Emeth to bring six FREE, in-person classes that aim to help caregivers reduce stress, improve self-confidence, learn different ways to communicate, and help them make difficult decisions. The six-part series grows on each class before it, offering new tools, information, and resources with each class.

“The mission is for caregivers to practice self care, because if they aren’t taking care of themselves, the care receiver doesn’t receive good care,” says Amy Woodell, Amy Woodell  Community health and Education Coordinator at Cobb County Senior Services.

Classes will be small, limited to 13 people in addition to two class leaders, in order to encourage a close-knit environment where learning can grow and questions can be answered.

“We give people other caregivers they can reach out to,” says Connie Gorz, a Powerful Tools for Caregivers leader since November 2014. “We limit the class sizes and find that those people will bond, be their one support team, and continue conversations after the class is over.”

Caregivers caring for themselves is an important part of the process that is often overlooked, and caring for themselves can help them better care for others. Though not an official support group, caregivers will have the opportunity to experience support and camaraderie from other adults who understand what they do on a daily basis.

“The Powerful Tools for Caregivers is part of AgeWell’s ongoing commitment to improving the lives of caregivers and care receivers in the metro Atlanta area, and we are so excited to be able to provide this class,” says Jennifer Curry, Program Manager. “We hope for those that attend the class to walk away feeling empowered, less alone, and more knowledgeable of the tools that AgeWell offers mature adults and their families.”

The classes run at 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM on Mondays at Temple Kol Emeth, with the first class beginning on January 22. To learn more and to register, call or email Ashley Maloy at 770.677.9499 or [email protected].
